Why? The symbol is destined to become the international symbol of infertility awareness and support for people challenged with infertility. To give Fertility Hope. The physical, emotional, and financial hardships experienced by those battling infertility make this a medical and life crisis that has been shadowed in shame and stigma too long.
What does the symbol represent? The colors of light blue and pink are traditionally colors connected with babies. The ancient symbol of a spiral represents movement, action, creation, and a journey. Within the spiral the heart is a symbol of love, life, and happiness.
How will the symbol help? As the pink ribbon, yellow bracelets, and red ribbon have helped breast cancer, cancer, and HIV respectively, symbols are powerful ways to raise awareness and rally survivors to feel less isolated and proud of their journeys. With the stigma and shame removed from infertility, the people struggling will feel more supported and thereby be able to better contribute to the world.
Who will it help? It is estimated that over 7 million women a year in the US alone suffer from infertility (unable to conceive after 1 year of trying or repeated miscarriages.) Of these, over 1 million will visit fertility specialists and undergo invasive, and expensive medical procedures.
When will it help? Now! Get the message out, display the symbol! Be the change you want to see! It is time to end the shame and stigma of infertility. Empower women and men struggling to become parents feel proud of their efforts!!!
What is 1in7? It is a domain name that forwards to this information page. It is estimated that 1 in 7 women will be challenged with infertility in her lifetime. The 1 in 7 org web address was created to go along with the symbol for women weren't ready to wear the symbol with the phrase "Infertility Awareness." Hopefully some day the symbol will be so well known that it won't have to have any explanation!
